How It Started
A Sleepless Night and a Simple Question
It started the way most great things do — with a problem that needed solving and a mother who refused to settle.
When our founder, Claire Maddox, brought her daughter Wren home from the hospital in the spring of 2019, she did what every new parent does: she reached for the softest thing she could find. What she found instead were products full of synthetic fabrics, harsh dyes, and confusing ingredient lists that no sleep-deprived parent should ever have to decode.
"I remember sitting in the nursery at 3am, reading the label on a swaddle blanket under my phone flashlight," Claire recalls. "I couldn't pronounce half of what was in it. I kept thinking — there has to be something better. Something that's truly safe, truly soft, and actually beautiful."
There wasn't. So she made it herself.

From day one, Claire set out with a clear mission: create a line of baby essentials that parents could trust completely — not just marketing-speak trust, but real, verified, sleep-easy-at-night trust.
That meant sourcing only the highest-quality cotton and bamboo from mills with transparent supply chains. It meant partnering with manufacturers who pay fair wages and maintain safe working conditions. And it meant saying no — many times — to shortcuts that would have been cheaper and easier but compromised what Sage & Cradle stands for.
Every dye we use is azo-free. Every finish is toxin-free. Every thread is chosen with the understanding that it will be pressed against the most sensitive skin in the world.

The Idea is Born
Claire spends Wren's first months researching fabric certifications, visiting mills, and sketching what would become Sage & Cradle's first collection from her kitchen table in Nashville.
First Collection Launches
With just four products — two swaddles, a sleep sack, and a milestone blanket — Sage & Cradle launches online. The first run sells out in 11 days entirely through word of mouth.
The Community Grows
Our moms-to-moms community reaches 50,000 families. We introduce the Nursery & Keepsakes collection and launch our first Gifts for Mom line — because she deserves something soft too.
Committed to Better
Sage & Cradle formalizes its toxin-free standard across the full product line and commits to carbon-neutral shipping. We plant one tree for every order shipped through our partnership with One Tree Planted.
